We celebrate the holidays in Key West a little differently. For Thanksgiving, we abandoned the idea of a traditional turkey (there’s no oven on the boat) and decided to invite all of our guests over to the marina for steaks on the grill. We hung out on the picnic table (right on the water) looking out at the channel.

We hosted seven guests on the three boats during Thanksgiving. Robert, and Katrina from Alabama showed up on an impromptu trip where they picked up Phil (Jay), a Couchsurfer doing some seasonal volunteer work for HelpX. Maartje and Stijn were visiting from the Netherlands and staying out on the Mangrove Ninja. Lastly, Christian and Gayle are professional house sitters from Australia who took a cruise to Miami from London and then came to stay on the boat. Their next house-sit is in Switzerland through Trusted House Sitters.

Amber is in the back right, Zappa is in the front on the second photo, and Gatito the dog is somewhere under the table begging for scraps (even though he’s not supposed to!)

We celebrated with drinks, sweet potatoes and plantains (a Caribbean favorite), chickpea salad (with whatever was in the fridge), and Zappa’s no-bake pumpkin-spiced Jello pudding pie – which I might add, was delicious.

We had beautiful weather: Sunny skies, a slight breeze, high 70s to low 80s temperatures. Just perfect! (Last year’s Thanksgiving was much colder).
